The Visit of the Turtle

       The Visit of the Turtle

Walking this spiritual journey has shown me many amazing things. The more I meditate and discover my soul and true being, the closer I get to mother nature and all of the beings of the Earth.

In fact, I do not even need to go searching, sometimes nature will just connect with me in my yard. The trees and plants will speak, and there are numerous animals that come to visit including birds, hawks, deer, and bears to name a few.

I want to tell you about one of the recent, comical and most amazing of the visits we have had.  That was the visit of the turtle.

Yes, the turtle. One thing we have never seen in our yard in the 6 years we have lived in our house was a turtle. I was walking into the kitchen and I caught a glimpse  of it at the edge of my patio.  My wife and I got pictures of it, but we took them from inside as we did not want to scare it in its habitat.  We were so excited to have it come visit.

Now for the funny part. Every day we would get visits from a rabbit. Sure enough, here comes Mr. Rabbit. He was busy walking along, eating clover when he came up on…..The turtle. And there it was. It was "on" in my backyard. A fable comes to real life in the Walter's backyard. The tortoise vs the hare.  They were ready to go, or so it seemed, but the rabbit hopped on and the turtle kept in its place. I would discover why soon enough.

Now for something amazing that happened. That turtle never moved, except for its back leg shifting dirt around. It stayed in the same spot, up against the patio. It finally left sometime after darkness had settled in. Then I got curious. Why did it not move and why was it moving its back leg. I researched it and to my surprise, it was probably laying eggs. Turtles pick a spot of good fertile soil to lay their eggs, and near our house would also limit predators.  They move their back legs to dig into the soil to lay the eggs.  Then they wait until darkness to lay them and then leave.

I went outside the next day, and sure enough there was a mound and you could tell that the Earth had been dug into.  I am so excited that we may get to see turtle babies. I researched that as well.  3 months. So I have put a protective barrier around the egg mound, and now we wait until October.

What a blessing to know that the turtle  came to us to entrust us with the eggs.  It is such a wonderful feeling to be connected to all of the beings of the Earth.

Now we just have to get the rabbit babies and we can get a neighborhood track meet going.

Blessings!
